Highlights in this park
Wells Gray Park is a spectacular destination hidden in the Cariboo Mountains of east-central British Columbia. Famed for its old-growth rainforest, lush alpine meadows, and many waterfalls, Wells Gray offers an extraordinary range of outdoor attractions. Popular activities include:
Hiking for every ability, ranging from short walks to multi-day adventures, boating, canoeing, kayaking, river rafting, birding, wildlife viewing and horseback riding.
Backcountry Areas
The term ‘backcountry’ refers to any area more than 1 km from a highway or park road. Wells Gray Park offers many backcountry hiking trails as well as user-maintained campsites.
Clearwater/Azure Marine
The area around Clearwater and Azure lakes is popular with canoeists, kayakers, and motorboaters. There are boat-access campsites on both lakes. Boat tours are available, offering opportunities to view the many waterfalls along the lakeshores.
Clearwater River
An isolated area along the Clearwater River features some of the park’s most spectacular scenery. This area offers opportunities for kayaking and fishing. Three companies provide rafting adventures on the river.
Corridor
The Wells Gray Corridor area includes the Pyramid and Clearwater Lake/Falls Creek campgrounds, which are vehicle accessible. For more information, see the camping section.
The Corridor area offers hiking trails and spectacular views along the main road from the park entrance to Clearwater Lake. During the summer, this area of the park has a concession managed by the park operator.
Mahood Lake
At the southwestern tip of Wells Gray, Mahood Lake is another beautiful destination. It includes a quiet, family-oriented campground as well as more remote marine campsites and is noted for its fishing opportunities.
Murtle Lake
Murtle Lake is world-renowned as the largest canoe-only lake in North America. It offers pristine waters and 100 km of shoreline in a remote location. Canoe-in campsites are available along the shore.
Spahats Creek
The day-use area at Spahats Creek is noted for its waterfall and panoramic view of the Clearwater Valley. This is a truly peaceful destination, despite being just 10 km north of Clearwater.
Trophy Mountain
The Trophy Mountain area covers approximately 6,900 hectares of Wells Gray Park. Many visitors are attracted to the area by its spectacular wildflowers. It also offers opportunities for day-hiking and overnight backcountry trips.
